Ink & Chapter vs Reedsy

Reedsy is a marketplace. You browse vetted freelancers, hire them individually, and manage the project yourself. We are a studio. One team, one project lead, one timeline. Both work; the right choice depends on whether you want to be the project manager.

The verdict

Reedsy is the right choice if you want to hand-pick each freelancer, are comfortable managing five contracts, and have the time to coordinate handoffs. We are the right choice if you want one accountable studio that owns the project end-to-end and pairs the team to your book on day one.

Row by row

Side by side, dimension by dimension.

Below is the honest breakdown. Where we have a clear advantage, we say so. Where the other model has the advantage, we say that too.

Dimension Ink & Chapter Reedsy
Engagement model Integrated studio. One contract, one project lead, one timeline. Writer, editor, designer all on the same team. Marketplace. You hire freelancers individually, sign separate contracts, manage the handoffs.
Team match We propose the writer and editor by name on the proposal, matched to your category. You browse profiles, request quotes, choose. Excellent for self-directed buyers.
Project management Our project lead owns the schedule. Fortnightly deliverables. No handoff friction between editor and designer. Project management is on you. Each freelancer has their own cadence.
Pricing Fixed per-service price; quote within 48 hours of discovery call. Per-freelancer quotes; you collect multiple bids for each role.
Quality bar Senior editorial bar set by the founder, applied across every project. Reedsy vets freelancers; quality is high but varies more across the roster than within a single studio.
Best fit Authors who do not want to be the project manager. Authors who do.

Reedsy comparison FAQ

Questions authors ask before choosing one.

Is Reedsy more expensive or cheaper than your studio?

It depends on which freelancers you hire and how well you negotiate. Reedsy's market rates for senior freelancers are similar to our per-service starting-from prices. The savings are typically not in unit cost — they're in only paying for the services you decide you need. The cost is more PM time on your side.

Can a Reedsy freelancer also work with you?

Some of our writers and editors take work through Reedsy. The studio and the marketplace are not mutually exclusive markets. The thing you get with us that you do not get with marketplace bookings is the integrated handoff between writer, editor, designer, and marketing.

Which model produces better books?

Both can produce great books. Reedsy projects tend to live or die on the author's PM skill. Studio projects tend to live or die on the studio's editorial bar. If you are confident in your own PM, Reedsy can deliver. If you are not, the studio is the lower-risk path.
